I had a humbling moment recently that I wanted to share with you all. I was reading the NY Post the other day, on my phone while on the train and I saw a video of a company called Humble Design, revealing a new home to a deserving family. I was immediately sobbing on the spot. This company’s efforts and dedication to helping others was so inspirational and moving. It truly manifested the impression that we can all make a difference in the world. As soon as I arrived to the Pink Chicken offices I was compelled to go to their website to find out more. Let me tell you, this company is legit. It is so simple what they do and SO SO good!
I read further, “Humble Design is a non profit organization, helping families transitioning out of homeless shelters by providing furnishing and design services. They turn an empty house into a clean, dignified and welcoming home. It’s a very simple idea that can change a family’s future.”
Immediately I thought wait a minute...what if they came home to a beautifully furnished home and ALSO a closet full of clothes! I called the director Julie Nagle and we devised a plan. We decided the next time she had a family whose sizes worked with what we offer here at Pink Chicken, we would donate!! I can’t even begin to explain how thrilling it was to put together a box of clothing, books and crafts for a family who would love and appreciate them - a gesture that would possibly make a difference in their lives.
Julie told me something amazing that has stuck with me ever since. She explained that 47% of families that transition out of homelessness become homeless again. That is a massive percentage. Through the support of Humble Design, the percentage, however, drops to 1%. Amazing right?! In giving a family what they need so they don’t have to worry about the basics, they are able to focus on everything else they need to do to support their family. I can’t think of anything better. This company’s objective has since remained very dear to me and I encourage you all to check out their website www.humbledesign.org and donate if you can!
